Frame Transfers in Massachusetts

A Massachusetts frame transfer is the transfer of only the serialized frame or receiver of a firearm. Not a complete functioning firearm. Both federal and Massachusetts law treat frame or receivers as a firearm, so the customer must be at least 21, possess a valid Massachusetts License to Carry, complete ATF Form 4473, pass the required background check, and have the transaction recorded through the Massachusetts MIRCS system.

The remaining unregulated components, such as the slide, barrel and recoil assembly, are procured by the buyer or sold separately as a part kit. Once the customer assembles the frame into a complete firearm, current Massachusetts guidance requires the completed firearm to be registered again through MIRCS.

A frame transfer does not override Massachusetts restrictions on assault-style firearms, prohibited magazines or other unlawful configurations. Availability also depends on the particular frame and whether the transferring dealer determines that the transaction complies with current state and federal requirements.
